**Job Description**
**Summary** The individual in this position serves as a Surgical Technologist within the Operating Room.
The Surgical Technologist possesses comprehensive knowledge of surgical procedures and effectively demonstrates proficiency in their execution. Responsibilities include ensuring the availability and proper functioning of all necessary supplies and equipment for each procedure.
The incumbent is tasked with correctly assembling and confirming the sterility of instruments for use. The Surgical Technologist must anticipate the needs of the surgeon and maintain an accurate account of medications, sharps, instruments, and sponges. Additionally, this role encompasses the responsibility of maintaining and monitoring the sterile field.
**Responsibilities** *(30%)* Demonstrates thorough knowledge of surgical procedures and exhibits problem
-solving abilities relevant to the procedure being performed. Verifies items listed on the physician's preference card and ensures the accountability of supplies to facilitate accurate billing for patient charges.
*(30%)* Exemplifies proper equipment usage, including the assembly of equipment, management of disposables, and adherence to cleaning and sterilization protocols. Ensures all equipment, supplies, and instruments are accurately assembled and operational for surgical procedures.
*(30%)* Maintains a sterile environment. Monitors the sterile field closely and identifies breaches in sterile technique.
*(10%)* Efficiently sets up the sterile field with instruments in a timely manner. Maintains an accurate inventory of all medications, sponges, instruments, and sharps present within the sterile field, in accordance with established policies.
**Other Duties and Responsibilities:
** Exhibits a positive, courteous, and helpful demeanor toward patients, visitors, physicians, and colleagues. Cultivates and maintains constructive working relationships with interdisciplinary personnel to effectively meet patients' needs.
Demonstrates composure and efficiency in high-pressure situations. Communicates significant changes or abnormal findings promptly to appropriate team members. Participates in regulatory surveys and engages in performance improvement initiatives. Assists with the orientation, ongoing competency evaluations, education, and professional development of staff. Actively attends and participates in professional association activities and programs to remain informed regarding regulations, guidelines, and standards of professional care.
Stays abreast of new developments in the field by reading professional journals and attending seminars. Meets on-call responsibilities and provides additional shift coverage as required. Performs other duties as assigned.

**Certifications and Licensures** Credential: BLS (Basic Life Support)
Equivalent Experience: Must be obtained within one month of hiring or transferring.
Qualification Source: American Heart Association.

Upon graduation, the individual may certify for the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) examination or complete a certified Surgical Technology program, which results in eligibility for the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) certification. Valid certifications must be maintained with the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) as well as the NCCT. Education Specialization: N/A Essential: True

- A graduate surgical technician pending certification or a non-certified surgical technician.
- A certified surgical technologist with two years of experience or less. - A Surgical Technologist I capable of independently scrubbing basic surgical procedures.
- If a career ladder is implemented at the medical center, the Surgical Technologist I must complete skills and practices defined for that role.
- Operating room competency must be consistently maintained.
- Manual dexterity and mechanical skills are necessary for the effective use and handling of surgical instruments. - Strong interpersonal skills are required to communicate effectively with individuals and groups and to convey ideas and concepts clearly and understandably.
- The ideal candidate will have graduated from a CAAHEP-accredited surgical technology program or an equivalent military surgical tech training program and possess either an Associate's degree in Surgical Technology or certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST). A preference will be given to those who hold the certification as a Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C).
